10 Must-Visit Towns in Costa Rica — And Why Jacó Deserves a Spot on Your List
Over the years, I’ve had great opportunities to explore Costa Rica from active volcanoes to golden beaches and from bustling surf towns to quiet jungle hideaways. Each visit has left me inspired, amazed, and craving more. While most travelers know the famous highlights — Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio — there’s so much more to discover beyond the typical tourist trail. For first timers, these of coarse are a great place to start but don't stop there.
I’ve put together a list of 10 towns and areas that I think are must-visits for anyone wanting to experience the heart of Costa Rica. Some are popular, some are hidden gems, and one town in particular — Jacó — is often misunderstood, yet it has so much to offer.
Town #1: Jacó – Central, Vibrant, and Seriously Underrated

I can’t start this list without talking about Jacó. It’s a place that’s near and dear to my heart — and sometimes people get the wrong impression. Sure, it has surf and nightlife, but Jacó is so much more.
Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring Costa Rica. From here, you’re just a short drive from Manuel Antonio, waterfalls, national parks, and countless adventure tours. You can zipline, hike, surf, or even go on a crocodile tour in the nearby estuary. And if you’re into wellness, yoga classes and sunset beach sessions are always on the menu.
But what I love most is the chance to experience real Costa Rica life — local markets, hidden beach bars, and opportunities to connect with locals. Jacó is perfect for first-timers because everything you need is close by, yet it’s far enough away from the crowds to feel authentic, and gorgeous sunsets from our condo.
Pro tip: We loved Jacó so much that we bought a place here — our boho-inspired Airbnb is tucked between jungle and ocean. It’s the perfect home base for anyone wanting to explore Costa Rica while having a peaceful retreat to come back to each day. Check it out here
Town #2: Monteverde – Cloud Forest Magic
If you love nature, adventure, and a little mystery, Monteverde is for you. The cloud forest here feels almost enchanted — misty hikes, hanging bridges swaying over the canopy, and the rich aroma of coffee farms everywhere you go. Every visit feels like stepping into a living postcard.
Don’t miss the chance to sip fresh coffee at a local farm or catch a sunset that paints the mountains in pink and gold. Monteverde is one of those spots that makes you slow down, breathe, and just exist in the moment.
Town #3: Nosara – Wellness & Surf Paradise
Nosara is a slice of beachside heaven. Known for its yoga retreats, healthy eateries, and laid-back surf vibe, it’s perfect for anyone looking to recharge or chase waves. The town has this calm, restorative energy that makes you feel connected to nature, yourself, and everyone around you. It’s also a great spot to try surf lessons or just enjoy quiet mornings on the sand with a fresh smoothie in hand. I can't say it's the easiest place to get to though.
Town #4: Ojochal – The Culinary Gem
Ojochal often flies under the radar, but for food lovers, it’s a dream. Tucked into the southern Pacific coast, this town blends rainforest and beach life with world-class dining. Think French and Italian-inspired cuisine in a jungle setting. It’s the kind of place where you can have fresh ceviche for lunch and a locally sourced, gourmet dinner by candlelight. Ojochal feels intimate, off-the-beaten-path, and completely magical. I got many insider tips from a good friend who lived there for many years.
Town #5: Puerto Viejo – Caribbean Soul
Puerto Viejo is a whole different vibe — colorful, lively, and dripping with Afro-Caribbean culture. Reggae music floats through the streets, the food is vibrant and spicy, and the beaches are stunning. This side of Costa Rica is slower, more relaxed, and full of heart. If you want to experience a completely different side of the country, Puerto Viejo is where to go.
Town #6: Uvita – Whale Watching + Waterfalls
Uvita is nature at its finest. Marino Ballena National Park is famous for whale watching (season depending), and there’s an abundance of waterfalls and jungle trails to explore. Uvita has a peaceful, rejuvenating energy — it’s perfect for slowing down and soaking in the pura vida lifestyle. It’s also quiet enough to feel like you’ve discovered a little secret of Costa Rica.
Town #7: Sámara – Chill, Family-Friendly Beach Town
Sámara is one of my favorite spots for calm waters and a laid-back pace. Families love it, but it’s also great for solo travelers or couples looking for quiet beaches, yoga classes, and the kind of community that feels welcoming and relaxed. It’s not overrun by tourists, yet it has everything you need for a comfortable and memorable stay. I loved the treehouse on the beach!
Town #8: La Fortuna – Volcano & Hot Springs
La Fortuna is a classic for a reason. Towering volcanoes, adventurous hikes, and spa-like hot springs make this area unforgettable. It’s perfect for thrill-seekers and those who want a little luxury after a day of exploring waterfalls and rainforest trails. Spelunking (caving) was sure something I will never forget. La Fortuna has a mix of adventure, nature, and relaxation that keeps visitors coming back year after year.
Town #9: Tortuguero – Wildlife Wonderland
If you love wildlife, Tortuguero is paradise. This remote area is famous for sea turtles, canals, and rainforest immersion. Imagine gliding down quiet waterways while monkeys, birds, and turtles surround you — it’s an experience that stays with you forever. Tortuguero is a bit off the beaten path, which is exactly why it’s so special.
Town #10: Dominical – Surf, Soul, and Waterfalls
Dominical is laid-back, hippie-chic, and full of natural beauty. Surfers flock here for world-class waves, but the town also offers waterfalls, jungle trails, and a chill, soulful vibe that makes it feel like a hidden gem. Dominical is the perfect combination of adventure, peace, and pura vida living.
